Dead Kennedys were probably my fav punk outfit when I was growing up. If you're not from Aus, then it's probably doubtful you'll have heard of the Celibate Rifles(?), but they are a great Aussie punk band.

Quote :You DO understand that it's not about the creatures, but about people... and that it's not a horror movie...

I got the basic idea, sure. I just thought the bugs/spiders were a little generic. The last big creature looked great, but it was still just an elephant with some tentacles coming out of it.

I'm probably a bit of an old school purist, one of those people that think horror (and I don't know why you wouldn't call The Mist a horror movie, sci-fi maybe?) attained perfection back in the 80's with really visually creative movies like The Thing and Poltergiest.

Rob Bottin (special effects/makeup guy) is just the man!

Quote :The Mist

dont read about it, dont look for what people say about it just watch it.

I took your advice, and grabbed it up while I was waiting for my Indian takeaway. I found it a fairly ordinary but watchable B-grade horror flick, passable enough to supplement a TV dinner anyway. Creature design could have used a good tweak though.

Looks like they had a lot of fun making it, on a low budget and incredibly tight schedule.

For me mid to late 20s is (was) a great age to be. Late teens/early 20s can be exhilarating and tons of fun, but there's still so much to learn about yourself and other people, and some of that can actually be pretty painful to deal with.. there's love (girlfriends), and moving away from the safe cocoon of family and discovering new places/ideas, and finding yourself- if you're not ready for it some things can just come up and hit you like a ton of bricks, at least that was my experience. Early 20's can be rough.

Late 20's, early 30s (I'm 32 now) seems to be an altogether smoother ride, which I'm grateful for. I still don't have kids of my own so I'm probably starting to fall a little behind the average curve of experience here, but that's ok. I'm also back at school which is probably making me feel a little younger than I actually should. Not going to complain though.

There's a government push in Australia right now to filter net traffic in an attempt to limit access to child pornography sites and things of that nature. With the filter in place we can look forward to our internet speeds dropping upto 80%, which says to me that this 'solution' isn't going to work for very long. People will shout it down.

I believe that there should probably be some measure of protecting kids from harmful stuff on the net, but all the solutions I've seen so far which don't fall under the responsibility of parents seem incredibly ham fisted and unworkable. Maybe kids shouldn't be allowed to get on the net until they're 18? Problem solved.

I think if most kids can handle the nightly news, they're probably going to be able to handle the internet.

Unless things are really serious, I wouldn't recommend any kind of prescribed medication.

Look at how much coffee you're drinking (if you are) and cut down on that. Too much coffee is a very simple way to increase nervousness/agitation and is easily remedied.

Go swimming, jogging, or try other kinds of rigorous exercise. That might help burn some of that nervous energy away and trigger the release of endorphins (help you feel good).

Some teas have a calming effect.

Reading can help get you out of your 'head' a bit.

And as much as I hate to say it, you could try some meditation/yoga. No cheesy new age music though!

Future Pinball is about a 20 meg download. Check out the forum for different download sites for tables- some tables are quite small in size, others are larger. It's free.

I've posted a few times here but 'Within a Deep Forest' is a small and cute little game with great atmosphere which is also quite challenging.

Grid is fun if you're playing with the keys and not worrying about whether it's up to todays standards in realism. It's not a game to be taken seriously. Not played GT5 but it looks pretty good on paper (decent physics, very nice graphics).

Agree with PB. He has some funny moments, atleast 2 or 3 per review, but I don't find his stuff as humourous as some of the Euro Gamer reviews. He's the only reviewer who includes his own graphics/animations though, which is neat.

I saw recently that 'Zero Punctuation' makes it into the top 10 (20?) searches on google, so he's pretty darn popular.

It's funny, but I like almost every song that Kev posted up (most which I've heard before at different times and places)- which got me to thinking why I never buy or actively listen to rap/hip-hop. I think the reason is that it's a very social music, much more fun to listen to with friends, or when you're on a road-trip or something, or relaxing in a bar/club.

(Hip Hop doesn't really satisfy me as a music to dance to, for that I really need something a bit harder and more intense (like some good tribal/tech house or detroit techno- I usually hate trance)- I can never get into that relaxed/cool hip hop groove... )

On the subject of home listening, my musical tastes get very private and deep... Gyorgy Legeti, Glenn Branca.. stuff you wouldn't normally think about playing for your friends unless they're quite open-minded or adventurous musically, or which puts your girlfriend immediately on edge or in a bad mood, telling you to turn it off. Hip Hop can be interesting and complex music, but I've never found it great for deep listening. Maybe Kev, you could recommend something which could help fit that bill?

Hip Hop for me is usually a grubby old mix tape stuffed in the glovebox of a friends car.

Quote :look to the history of drugs you see a lot of stuff we think is normal was forbidden sometime in history.

The reverse is true in many cases as well. Different cultures have emphasised different drugs in different times, and have been shaped and defined by them.

You have to feel for the kids. It's sad, but I guess they'll learn their lessons about intolerance and prejudice the hard way from the local school bully. Good luck getting a job too, with a name like Aryan Nation.

When I was a kid I was right into breakdancing (like every other kid at school)- Rocksteady Crew, Kraftwerk (Tour De France), all those old classics. Our mission was to find the biggest cardboard box we could to flatten out and break on. I had a rap compilation tape which was the second tape I ever owned (first was an album by Jackson 5).

Couple of videos for the nostalgic.

When I hit teenager I wasn't really into rap/hiphop at all. I liked a bit of RunDMC and a couple other things, but that was probably about it.

These days, I'm not really up to date with a lot of this stuff. I've never bought a rap/hip hop album (apart from that first compilation when I was 6) but lots of friends get into it so I just vicariously get to listen to things through them. There are of course amazing performers and artists in rap/hiphop, but it's pretty far away from my usual stomping ground.

I do love this guy though, Elf Transporter. I've seen him a number of times in Melbourne. Absolutely brilliant.
